Choosing Deer Food Plot Seed
There are many choices when it comes to deer food plot seed and you can customize your choice depending upon where you live and the conditions on which you have to work with.
Many of the brands are no till, shade tolerate, and/or climate zone specified. You can also find your choice of deer forage and most can be planted in either the spring or the fall.

For our deer food plot, we choose 2 different types of seeds and mixed them together. Sections of our food plot are pretty shaded, so one of the blends we choose was a shade tolerate blend.
We choose Wildgame Innovations Backwoods Blend and Antler King No sweat. Both of these are no till blends.
We mixed the food plot seed with sand as this helps it spread easier and more evenly. We used a 2 to 1 sand to seed ratio.
We used a simple hand held spreader that worked great and threw it several feet.
We did use a
disc and a drag to prepare the ground,
although we also threw some of the extra seed on top of a different section of ground that had not had anything done to it, just to see if the seed would grow.
It did come up after doing this. However the area we choose had minimal sunlight so it didn't do as well as the other plots that did have sun.
We took pictures of our food plot after one week of being planted and then again at one month.

When planting your deer crops, more is not necessarily better. We were told that applying too much in the hopes of having a heavier crop was actually just wasting the seeds and your money.
Too many seeds can result in a thinner crop as they have to fight for room and nutrients. You can always throw more seed down later if you are not satisfied with your coverage.
Though we were pleased with the blends we chose, you will want to base your decision on the food plot you wish to plant, be it in a sunny or shady location, whether or not you want to till the ground, and possibly on your climate zone.
