Does a Deer Decoy Really Work?
For those of you wondering if a deer decoy can really help to draw bucks in, the answer is yes!
When you call deer, a buck is smart enough to know where the sound came from. If he goes to investigate that sound, he also knows that he should be able to see something.
When he starts to approach and as he gets closer, he knows that something is wrong when there is nothing there for him to see.
By using a decoy, this gives him a visual enticement, along with the sound he heard.
Add some scent to that, in the form of buck urine, and then another one of his senses are alerted.
Depending upon the time of year, and that particular buck's personal aggression level, they have been known to actually attack the decoy or even to mount it!
You can find a decoy in all types of styles, and prices. The amount of choices are amazing!
There are fawns, does, bucks, and a combination style.
They come in plastic, foam, inflatable, full bodied, partial bodied, and some whose tails and heads move with the slightest breeze!
Since you want to try and make everything you do as realistic as possible while hunting, it is important not to mix up the scents and calls.
If you are using doe decoys, then make sure you use doe estrus, and bleats.
If you are using buck decoys, then use buck urine and grunts and/or rattling antlers.
